Artist's Statement

Painting in the landscape relies on stories, the history of people and places and preceding paintings as much as it relies on interesting and compelling forms and light. It has to do with mixing observation and study with discovery with imagination.

Since 1995 I have spent several weeks each summer painting in County Mayo, Ireland.

Last summer, a rather boyish looking forty-year old bachelor farmer took time away from mending the roof on his corrugated metal barn to inquire about the progress of my painting. I had set up my easel in a turnout just a glance down the hill from the farm which was his father's before him and his grandfather's beginning in the 1920's. He looked at the rather loosely defined brushy painting started only moments earlier and said, "if it is the faintest distance you are after you would be better off up the hill."

With that, he motions towards the jelly bean shaped rental car. "I'll get to the roof later." Turn left here, via the logging road. Most of Ireland is open, bog, pasture and rocky-thistled fields. What few trees there are have been planted recently in what is commonly call a "forestation scheme" to provide Ireland with a crop of native lumber. The narrow road which is lined on either side by thin red pine and some sad looking northern spruce quickly turns into a rutted trail barely passable in a tractor. My new friend insists the mud is not very deep and this little buggy would make it just fine. The trees look thinner and thinner. Mostly rock. Seems like the "scheme" wasn't such a grand idea I think to myself. Another pothole.

Then an open field edge topped with the North Atlantic horizon. "This here is where you will find the faintest distances," declared my farmer friend. The immensity of the panorama revealed itself slowly at first and then in a rush as dramatic skies opening and closing like heavy velvet curtains over the broad, time-sweeping landscape stage. Without taking his eyes off the horizon he added, "I come up here to think, just to think."
