Online: Riffing on the Past

In this six-week online class, we will engage with the history of art through the making of collages, paintings, drawings, and paper sculptures. We will not make copies of masterpieces. Instead, creative processes and concepts from diverse periods and styles will serve as starting points for personal experimentation. For example, in one exercise, we will look at Matisse’s use of paper cut-outs to work out a painting’s composition and then make paper cut-outs of our own objects and use them to experiment with a variety of approaches to composition. Weekly slide presentations will supplement the exercises and student work will be shared and discussed on Padlet, an online platform. Some previous experience with collage, painting, and drawing is recommended.
