Starting from Something – Drawing, Painting, and Collage

Where to begin? In this weekend workshop, we will start with quick and loose transcriptions of a painting from the past. These transcriptions will become collage paper. Collages will inform drawings as well as monotypes created with gelatin plates, which will in turn lead to the construction of more collages. Starting with something, but not bound by that something, we are free to experiment, play, transform, and alter. With each shift in process and media, we will push our work beyond the original source toward a more abstract and personal vision. Slide presentations of the work of modern and contemporary artists, teacher demonstrations, and group discussion of student work will supplement the exercises.
