Tetra Pak Printmaking

Tetra Pak is a type of food carton often used for soups, broths, and shelf-stable milks. Its plastic-faced foil lining also makes it a popular printmaking material, capable of producing etching-like prints with simple tools and a press.

In this workshop, we’ll use salvaged TetraPak cartons and learn how to score, peel, and cut them to create a range of visual effects. We’ll then print the plates, experimenting with both intaglio and embossing techniques while becoming familiar with the press.

In the morning, we’ll focus on techniques for making a plate and printing it in a single color. In the afternoon, students can create additional plates and explore adding color through multiple inks, layered printing, and chine collé (gluing thin papers into the print).

Experimentation is encouraged, so bring ideas and imagery you’d like to work from. All other materials will be provided. Each student will receive two TetraPak cartons, and you’re welcome to bring additional ones for added experimentation. All students will also receive two large sheets of paper. Additional sheets will be available for purchase from the instructor during class if needed.
