Artist Demo: Contemplative Painting Practice with Alicia Ethridge

January 21, 2026
Wednesday 10:30am - 12pm

Join us on Wednesday, January 21st for an Artist Demo with Alicia Ethridge, whose is featured in Concord Art’s curated exhibition, Motherhood as Muse.

Ethridge’s demo will introduce you to her approach to painting through a guided contemplative art practice. The session offers an opportunity to witness and/or create together while exploring attention, intuition, and embodied response as entry points into image-making.

Ethridge draws inspiration from Lectio Divina, a traditional contemplative practice that has evolved over time to include both spiritual and secular texts and imagery. You will be invited to slow down, enter into an image through imagination and sensory awareness, and allow meaning or insight to emerge organically. The emphasis is on process rather than product, and no prior experience with contemplative practice is necessary.

Ethridge will provide a selection of images for inspiration, though participants are welcome to bring their own—an image that evokes a strong emotional or physical response. Participants are encouraged to notice what draws their attention and how it resonates in the body. Participants are invited to bring something to draw with and something to draw on: perhaps a pen, journal, or sketchbook.

Alicia Ines Ethridge (b. 1984, New Jersey) is a visual artist based on the coast of Maine and a founding member of the Seven Artists Collective. Working primarily in oil and mixed media collage, her practice explores the tension between wildness and humanity through dreamlike landscapes and animal archetypes. Using bold color and expressive forms, she evokes emotional mythologies—moments of conflict, communion, and transformation that invite viewers to reconnect with instinct, intuition, and the untamed forces shaping our inner worlds.

Ethridge holds an MSW in Expressive Arts from the University of Southern Maine and a BA in Anthropology and Art History from Montclair State University. She has also studied at the Maine College of Art. Her creative practice is deeply informed by spiritual studies, wisdom traditions, and contemplative practices. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across New England, reflecting a commitment to personal inquiry and collective dialogue through art.
