Since the 1950s, there has been a great explosion in all forms of printmaking. Woodcut is the oldest and simplest type of printing. It is a very direct method that presents few technical problems and has become in the hands of inventive and energetic printmakers an exciting medium. The prints in this exhibition, by artists and printers in the New England area, include work as varied as meticulous wood engraving, bold black and white woodcuts,Ukiyo-e prints, reduction woodcuts, woodcut combined with other techniques such as etching and aquatint, free-standing prints incorporating sculptural forms, off-set viscosity woodcut monoprints, wood panels with collaged elements, intaglio woodcuts and prints in which the grain of the wood itself is the subject.
All the prints in the show are characterized not only by highly-developed technical skill, but by spontaneity, the creative use of materials and aesthetic freedom. The purpose of this exhibition is to demonstrate the richness and vitality of printmaking in the New England area.
